There are a variety of different types of pearls. Here is a little background information that will help you identify specific pearls in the jewelry pieces that you select. With this knowledge you will be informed about your pearls And your J. Jems piece. Types of Pearls
There are numerous types of pearls including natural, cultured, freshwater, saltwater and imitation.
Natural Pearl
Natural Pearls are formed naturally without any assistance from humans. Natural pearls are formed
when debris is lodged in the tissue of a pearl bearing mollusk, which can be an oyster, clam, etc. The shape of the
irritant dictates the ultimate shape of the pearl. This explains why few perfectly round natural pearls exist.
Cultured Pearls
Cultured Pearls are very similar to natural pearls, except for the fact that a pearl farmer inserts
the debris into the mollusk encouraging formation of the pearl. The pearl is then formed in the same way as a natural one would be.
By allowing the pearl farmer to control the initial insertion, he is able to
influence the shape, size and color of the pearl created.
Saltwater Pearls
Saltwater Pearls can be natural or cultured, but are grown in the ocean.
They are typically known for their brilliance and beauty, which makes them more valuable then the other types of pearls.
Imitation Pearls
Imitation Pearls are create by humans and are usually made of glass, plastic or ceramic.
These are not considered gems and are usually sold as costume jewelry.
